This book began one summer when I was ten, and its final revised version was completed when I am seventeen. It is a recollection of my fantasies and lived experiences from that time, a period when I constantly penned vastly different stories: a girl moving into a bizarre apartment; a girl losing her best friend; a girl in Tokyo meeting a relative who defied convention; a girl in Hangzhou trapped by debt and control; a girl losing her composure before a palmier pastry; a person handing a hundred-yuan note to a beggar boy before shutting the door. They share a common pain—lured by love, confined by the body, swallowed by the city, disciplined by society—while seeking an escape through mirrors, rain, snow, and food.
The first three chapters belong to the realm of romantic fiction. Borrowing the silhouettes of female archetypes from pop culture, I write about attachment, jealousy, control, redemption, and disappearance within intimate relationships. The two essays in the middle take Ophelia(the painting) and the piece "Cornfield Chase" as starting points to explore obsession, pursuit, and the traps of the self. The music commentary section uses Olivia Rodrigo as a lens to discuss the anger and anxiety of Gen Z girls, as well as the lie that "things get better when you grow up." The final three short stories, addressing social issues, stem from interviews and observations; they cover nightlife traps, debt, psychological control, binge eating, poverty, and the guilt of the bystander.
